Hook 1 - DCAP

Product Code: TL-H1-DC

This is our Hook 1 DCAP Pick and it features in our Speciality Series Pick range. Our Speciality Series Picks have been designed to be used on simple locks which are hard to pick. In order to add great security to a simple lock, a deep cut is made close to the bow of the key; however these deeper cuts at the front of the lock reduce the height of your ‘picking window.’

Locks can be picked because the line-up of the holes in the plug and in the shell are not perfectly linear. This turning pressure on the lock allows the individual pin sets to block the turning of the plug, enabling us to pick simple locks by individual finding and lifting these “blocking” pin sets. The cheaper the locks, the more poorly they have been made because the machining is worse, making them easier to pick. By applying turning pressure to the front of the plug, it puts a linear bias on the lock that tends to cause the front half of the pins to block turning which indicates to you that the pins are ready to be picked. A ‘click’ is made when you hit this point. Each pin set you pick adds a new pivot point or fulcrum within the plug to the shell interface. This shift releases the front pressure on the deeper front pins that you have already picked. The remaining pins then reside to the back of the lock, allowing the tapered shank of your pick to enter the lock more deeply.

Because your pick is taller and closer to the handle, when you have a deep cut in the front of your key, the movements that you make while picking the rear will cause most pin sets to lift those deep front pins above their sheer. This is what caused us to design Deep Cut Access Picks (DCAP).
